Independent Living - Home from Hospital service
What is this service?
Independent Living, organized by British Red Cross, are offering support for anyone over 18 who has recently come home from hospital.
The support offered lasts for up to 6 weeks and includes shopping assistance, transport to medical appointments, telephone befriending and the fitting of Pendant Alarms. Pendant Alarms are on a free trial basis for 6 weeks and then there is a monthly charge by the company that owns them.
Independent living also take referrals from professionals (e.g, GP, CCC, OT, Physio and social worker) for anyone over 18 who hasn't been in hospital, but who need a little extra support or pendant alarm, in order to prevent them being admitted into hospital or care, this is known as admission avoidance.
Volunteers visit the service user at home, either to take them shopping or shop for them. If attending a medical appointment, the service user would be collected from home and taken to their appointment where the volunteer would stay with them if required. Service users would need to be able to get into and out of a car unaided. If there is a parking charge the service user would be expected to pay for it.
Independent living, with the British Red Cross, also offers a mobility aids service. People who feel that they may need some extra support at home may hire out wheelchairs and commodes for a short period. To inquire about this service please call on 01743 457829 or 01952 228306.
